Valentine’s Day Cakes – Bake Fest Preparation
Mmmmmm, January has caught me off guard in many ways. It has gone by really quickly but at the same time has been so full that I’ve found it hard to catch my breath and look ahead to what has to be done. So yesterday I decided, with the help of my husband, to get ahead on some baking that I wanted to try.
I baked two different cakes for Valentine’s Day and will upload the recipes and proper pics in the next day or so. Baking on a Sunday has a gentle rhythm I have noticed, there are no time constraints, unless Robert is pausing the film we have been watching while I turn the cake in the oven. This lack of hurrying gives me the feeling of being something of an alchemist. Gently adding one ingredient after another and stirring gently. Carefully observing that the ingreeds do not billow out from inside the mixing bowl and that curdling is kept to a minimum.
I find it a lot easier to bake if I have all of the ingredients out in front of me before the process begins. However yesterday I was acting like a bit of a space cadet and Robert did this, most important part, of the prep for me without asking.
It’s not always harmonious in the kitchen. Sometimes I get slap dash and start flinging bits of equipment back and forward and Robert comes up with good ideas that I do not listen to and so he gets frustrated. We are both fairly competitive you see. I like this, it makes me laugh and gives our relationship/friendship an added frisson that is healthy because there’s a huge dollop of respect for each other too. However occasionally I pull rank, unfair I know, and remove Robert from the kitchen. A very naughty trick on my part. It’s “My kitchen” when I want to be in it alone but “Our Kitchen” when I can’t be bothered to stack the dishwasher!
The timer on my oven broke yesterday and I found that some of my baking efforts were slightly crispy around the edge. No matter. I bit in to one (several) of them and they were still moist on the inside. The movie that was on pause for most of this time was also very good.
