Snowy, Sugar, Cosy, Fire, Kiddie, Fun Day

“There are only two reasons that you have for waking your sleeping wife when it is her turn to sleep in - 1, A celebrity has died & 2, It’s snowed overnight.” – Michael McIntyre

We knew it was coming. Robert and I were up in Shropshire for the weekend and we knew that it was coming so we left very early on Sunday afternoon, just after lunch in fact, to avoid it. We certainly didn’t bump into any of any consequence whilst journeying back down to our part of the country and as Sunday evening drifted in to Sunday night we asked ourselves if it would miss us entirely.

But we woke up to this. In fact we even slept with the curtains open so that if the cat happened to settle on my head and wake me up I’d be able to keep up with what was going on. The cat settled near my head so the surprise was all ours.

It all goes so quiet. You can hear voices screaming with delight and fun in the park but they are muffled. You can see small amounts of snow being knocked off the trees by squirrels and fall silently to the ground.

It’s bright too. The house is brighter, as if all walls have been given a brand new coat of bright white paint and invisible lighting has been installed in hidden places. Outside, as the sun reflects off the snow at all angles, my eyes squint a little and it’s tempting to reach for the large bug shades that I often wear.

Boo isn’t super keen, although nobody forced her to wade, thigh high, in the crunchiness. She moans and then makes her way back inside…….still moaning.

The parks and fields look like my most recent Christmas Cake. Powdered sugar everywhere, enough to make snow angels and deep enough to step into right up to the top of my big ski socks. Kids were free of school and make snowmen. Teenage boys, also free of school, show off and make igloos. One can’t help but be a tad impressed and want to join in. And that is what I loved most about yesterday, the good spirits.

We walked in our road as if cars hadn’t been invented yet and said “hello” to each passer by. We heard conversations focusing on nothing but the weather and watched as everybody who works so hard found themselves free and headed to the cosy privilege that was the local pub. Good on them!
