Diamond Jubilee Weekend 2012

It’s Jubilee weekend and I wanted to show you around one of my local towns, Petworth. Whether you agree with the Royal Family or not I think that community spirit and the fact that the streets are decorated is enough to warm the coldest of cockles. The place looks brighter, more inviting, I wasn’t the only one out taking pictures for posterity yesterday and for those of us who have never known a war or the Spirit of the Blitz I think it’s important to at least get a taste of what it’s like when people come together as neighbours.

The local pub on the square.

Kids walking home from school, up the cobbled streets, underneath the bunting.

The shops have been busy decorating and I wish my bay trees looked this good!

The post box in the square dates back to the reign of George V 1910-1936. I bet it’s seen a fair bit while standing there.

Vintage flag on the hardware store.

And ribbon blowing in the sun on another set of bay trees outside a boutique. I really need to pay my bays more attention.

Ahhh, homemade bunting along the iron railing.

The same house has also given their Christmas wreath a Jubilee makeover. Look at the little cut-out Queen!!!! Love this for it’s sheer cuteness.

The street will be busy all weekend and there is a picnic on Sunday. They say it will rain but I hope not.

A picnic, live music, tea and cake. Makes me feel calmer already. As a nation we’re an easy bunch to please at times.

My current favourite front door. Square, green and decorated. Inviting, friendly and attached to a shop. Lovely.

Have a great weekend whatever you may be doing. If you’re celebrating the Jubilee I wish you much fun and frivolity. If you are stuck for simple ideas or Jubilee recipes then don’t forget that my Easy Jubilee eBook is only £1.00 on Amazon and you can download it instantly. Link is right below….

Thank you so much for reading this week. I love you and I shall see you on the other side. I’m off to plan our picnic.

Well we survived the British weather. Hubby and I left home at the crack of dawn , parked in London where he used to work and walked down to the river carrying food, chairs, binoculars etc. We got there for 8 30 am. and stood getting wet and cold for the rest of the day . Crackers! I hear you say! Yes crackers we are but so are one and a half million other Brits who waited in the rain to see the Queen. Even if she was only a tiny white spot on the horizon. We did chat to others in the crowd from as far afield as Australia and there was a great sense of sharing. We provided bin liners for those who just had to sit down and had nothing. (lots come totally unprepared for a long wait). The coffee shops did a roaring trade and the loos were kept supplied with toilet paper and everyone queued patiently. As soon as the Queen’s barge went under Tower Bridge, which opened for her, (we were yards away from it), the heavens opened. It had rained nearly all day, don’t get me wrong but this was ridiculous and a sign for me to go. People who put their brollys’ up infront of us were bombarded with a chorus of “Brollys down. Brollys down” and they did!. On leaving, the anti monarchists were still demonstrating on Tooley st. near London Bridge Station only to be met by choruses of God Save The Queen, drowning them out. I think the Queen stood in the cold so long to show her subjects.” If you do it for me I will do it for you.” I have had phases in my life where she was just a blurred figure in the background of British life but the older I get I see just what she has brought to this nation. Constancy, safety, decency, loyalty, honesty and many more things beside that keep our island nation afloat. God save the Queen.

    Happy Jubilee Weekend to all!

We watched the Thames River Pageant on TV from Virgina in the States and loved hearing about the history and seeing the 1000 boats of all kinds. I was astonished that both the Queen and Prince Philip stood for those hours of celebration – and rain. What amazing people they are.

    Cheers from afar!

  3. Kerry says:

I drove through Petworth on Friday night once I had finished working and must say it looks so much better than our town. But I didn’t realise there was a picnic going on on Sunday we may just pop on over I think. As really want Baba to experience a good old fashioned street party! xx

  4. Betty says:

How gorgeous! A beautiful English village all decorated and looking splendid!
    Wish I were there:)

  5. Citychick says:

Happy Diamond Jubille everybody. I keep hearing people saying that so I thought I’d try it.

  6. Dori says:

Oh, oh, OH! How I wish I could just pop into one of your photos! I would love to be there! A picnic in the market square with live music, and tea and cake! Alas, Tea and scones in my kitchen with the tv will have to do. ~Dori

(Love the red post box…… Such a rare thing in the U.S. now.)

  7. Jennie, Lincolnshire says:

My bunting is all a flutter, along with my huge Union Jack flag – had to sew
‘curtain weights’ on the bottom of it as it kept wrapping itself around the flagpole!! All’s well now… :) Looking forward to a wonderful Jubilee weekend. (Love all the photo’s Cherry – and what a great place Petworth looks – love the cobbled hill!) Have much fun :) Jennie

  8. Anne says:

We have a huge Union Jack flying from our bedroom window and the streets of Surrey are covered in red ,white and blue bunting. I love it. I am personally praying for good weather on Sunday. They say it’s going to be cold and raining. I don’t think it will dampen the British spirits.Even original boats used at Dunkirk during the war will be in the flotilla. I bet they get a great cheer. God bless them and God save the queen.

  9. April says:

I was going to ask, “Is that Petworth?” Then I saw it on one of the signs. What a fabulous English village/ town it is. Love the picture of the schoolboys on the cobbled street, what a great history we have. Loved the wreath, I thought at first it was one of your creations Cherry. The little figure of the Queen was so cute. I hope she enjoys her Diamond Jubilee, she deserves our loyalty for her service to the nation. I have a feeling England is going to be reshaped by events and be particularly blessed.

  10. jacqueline says:

our house is decorated with bunting and flags… and hubby collected good and sometimes rare royal items for a while, so they are down from attic and office and now looking regal and resplendant on shelves. even have a coronation coach figure…cool britannia
our town is decorated in red white and blue with celebrations planned for all weekend..and the olympic torch was run through the town yesterday..cool britannia indeed..

    happy weekend everyone,
love to you cherry and all the family espesh the cutie twins xxx

ps forgot to say LOVE the wreath….clever clever clever

    • Janet says:

Hope everyone has as good a day as Petworth intends happening and all the smaller villages around us. Funny how we can all prodce that good old fashioned community spirit when we need to. It makes it all wort while and the weather becomes secondary to everything.
      Enjoy. Janet

  11. Countrygirl says:

What fabulous photos Cherry. I love my country!!!!!! My hubby and I are going down to the River Thames on Sunday for the pageant, (not done since Henry V111 reign) and we will stand from early morning till afternoon in hope of seeing the Queen. We went to the last Jubilee and saw the Queen ride up and down The Mall. The atmosphere at these events is magical, the Queen has a unique gift of pulling the whole country together, and we lead the world in these kinds of celebrations and it makes me very proud. We have our bunting up on the drive and a huge Union Jack flying. It’s all so exciting. God save the Queen.

  12. I would love to come to a jubilee! I love in the middle of Montana and think it would be the coolest thing ever to come to one! Thanks for sharing the pictures, how fun!!

  13. Wendi Yates says:

Enjoy the celebrations! It looks fantastic and I wish I was there getting into the spirit of the occasion! I will have to see if I can find some bunting and put it up. Although the question of whether to maintain the monorchy surfaces every so often here in the “colonies” :) , I think she is amazing! Who else has a job to which they have been devoted to for 60 years? And I think that it is so important to have that arena of sober second thought who can raise questions about proposed legislation without having to pander to the fickle public. Look at the US for example, where voices of reason have been drown out by a radical right. Queen Elizabeth is a beacon of light and reason in a world that is sometimes incomprehensible. Does she make a few missteps? Certainly, who amongst us doesn’t? But her track record speaks for itself – Hip Hip Hooray! Have a knees ups time this weekend Cherry!

  14. Bex says:

I love the green ‘Queen’ wreath for sheer smile factor. I bought a whole bag of flags and bunting and as it happens, we’re going to be in and out a bit this weekend so might not see much of it. I may just put it up anyway but i’m going to have a little lie down first as i’ve given blood this afternoon and am feeling a bit sleepy. I love looking at the old photos of the Silver Jubilee from ’77 (the year I was born) so I am definitely going to try and take some for the social record.
Hope you have a fabulous picnic.
    Take care, Bex.x

  15. Alison says:

    Cherry,

This American family will be celebrating here too! I LOVE those decorations…reminds me of the festivities each year in the states around Independence Day.

Have a lovely weekend and a fantastic Jubilee!

    xx,
    Alison

  16. Laurie says:

Oh Cherry, Thanks for posting! We’re living vicariously through your lovely photos, all the way over here in the US of A! :) Wish we could join in and take in all the festivities!
    Laurie~

  17. Sue Marie says:

    Hi Cherry
    What beautiful decorations!
I just adore how everyone is coming together to celebrate! At Christmas we are all very good at gathering together with our families and cosying up indoors but this is the perfect excuse for everyone gathering together outside in the sunshine, friends, families, strangers who will become new friends…
I think we need a Summer Christmas every year as that would solve the problem but I’ll take the Jubilee as an excuse this year :)
Also, I went to Petworth’s Late Night Shopping event in December, what a pretty town it is, so many lovely boutiques! We stopped for hot chocolates in Coco Cafe Sugar Lounge… YUM!!
    Sue x

  18. sadie says:

problem solved! Bought it on Kobo and am reading it now! Makes me very impatient for your Book Book! x

  19. sadie says:

ahhh. I love how bonkers the nation has gone. I wasn’t going to bother decorating, as it’s The Girls’ birthday on Tuesday (she’ll be 6!!! how on earth??!!), so I’m preoccupied with that. But, was in B&Q this a.m, and saw red, white & blue lights for £10. How could I resist?! So now the front of the house has lights & my raggedy flag bunting from last year!

I want to buy your jubilee e-book, but am confused. Do I need a mobile phone or kindle to use it? I have neither, so I’m hoping it can be downloaded to my pc.

have a glorious weekend, happy jubilee!

    :)
    x

  20. Lydia says:

Lovely pictures once again Cherry. I’m wanting to visit Petworth now, it looks like a beautiful town. I shall also be out this afternoon making a photographic record for Jubilee.
The boys painted paper bunting recently so we’ll be putting that up soon.
    Happy Jubilee weekend Cherry xx

  21. Shirley says:

It’s so good to see the country getting involved, in the special weekend. You have a hardware shop, i’m so jealous, you don’t see many of those these days x

  22. Sally says:

I love this town!! Petworth’s looking good. You’ve inspired me to get out and take a photographic record too! Have a fabulous weekend xx
