Avoiding Those “Silly Presents”

We’ve all done it.
You’re out and about doing a bit of last minute shopping when you suddenly remember that you’ve not picked up Auntie Mable’s elasticated knickers. You rush to the store only to find that they’ve none in her size and then you have to race around before everything closes trying to find her something else that will suit. You actually end up spending more on a ‘Silly Present’ than something she really would have liked or needed.

This is a common scenario and one we have all found ourselves in but also one that can be totally avoided.

My advice, after many years of going over budget buying rubbish for people, is to make a list of each and every gift you have either bought or are still to buy for each and every person. You can then take your up-to-date list with you whenever you go shopping and you know at a glance what is still left to buy. It also gives you a lot longer to plan your trips knowing that there may only be five items left to get instead of fifty five that you may have forgotten.

Something else I have taken to doing over the last few years is wrapping the gifts up and labeling each pile for each person.
This way you can see at a glance everything that you have bought and completed and just how big some people’s piles are compared to others (!).

Keep them in your room or hidden away until you’ve purchased all that you need and then they can be officially ‘gift tagged’ and placed under the tree.

A simple idea that simplifies your Christmas and Auntie Mable won’t be stuck wearing the thong you bought her in haste!

Wise words Cherry! I have a little notebook that i carry always, noting presents bought, whether wrapped etc. Also useful for websites or books that you spot that will come in useful for presents! And, my biggest tip is that I buy gifts year round. It spreads the cost & it means you aren’t stuck with that rabbit-in-the-headlights look that kicks in with some people about NOW!Loving the blog, especially now at Christmas xoxo R
