Hand Painted Flower Pots

Happy Friday folks!!! It’s a long weekend here in the U.K. so I’m leaving you with something crafty in case you want to get out in to the garden and have a wee potter!

Hand Painted Flower Pots.
I had a windowsill at the front of the house that I wanted to make look a touch more pretty
. I initially bought only three terracotta pots (ninety eight pence each, can’t go wrong really!) but when I got them home and popped them into position the sill still looked a bit empty. So I bought three more and squashed them all in.

To begin with I gave each of the pots two coats of Farrow & ball paint, using the small sample pots. I used Green Ground, Pink Ground & Lulworth Blue.

Then, a couple of days later, I took the pots out into the morning garden and sat in the sun. Adding the dots to the rim of the top. I used a water based acrylic enamel paint and teamed green dots with the two pink pots, red dots with the blue and pink dots with the green. All of them combined on the sill add up to a summery scene, which was the aim of this crafty game. Once the dots were dry I painted on two coats of exterior varnish. You can use matt or gloss, I don’t think it’ll make much difference. BUT, and this is a big BUT, use an EXTERIOR varnish. I made the mistake of using an interior varnish and as soon as I watered the Chrysanthemums the paint bubbled due the porosity of the terracotta pots. Learn from my mistakes people as it will save you time and money and besides, I am more than happy to be of help!

Here they are all finished and in place on the windowsill. I intend to keep them there for the duration and expect them to come down some time in September when the weather turns.

The pink tulips were a surprise as I planted them last Autumn and had forgotten what colour they were. I also came out one morning and found the entire trough had been dug up by an animal of some sort so I really expected none to have survived. They go well with the new pots though, result!

A little close up. You can read about how I planted them up with Chrysanth’s right here……

…….and, AND, they look good from the inside of the house. It was warm enough to have the window open the other day and there they were. Sitting like guardians of prettiness and making an old Victorian windowsill very happy. I’d love to know how you get on if you decide to make some of your own.

Have a great weekend. I’m hanging out with Robert the Husband and family. We have friends coming over for lunch with their kids on Sunday and then Robert and I have a day to ourselves on Monday. We are still without a car due to the incident with the deer but seeing as we’re still rather relived to be here that’s all cool. What is not cool is how long some insurance companies can take deciding about where to let you get your work done. That is not cool but I’m not going off on one here and now. It’s a sunny day and yesterday I found out from the Met office website that we may be in for a scorcher of a Summer. After two consecutive washouts my only thoughts on this are along the lines of…

“OH YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

See you Tuesday with a delicious new recipe. They’re back…………………
