It’s Friday so I’m getting back in to the swing of things and getting crafty!

How to Make a Patchwork Seat Cover – Part One by Cherry Menlove

I’d had my eye out for a piano stool for ages and it was when we popped in to a little thrift store in my parents town a few weeks ago that I saw this one. I loved it’s shape and even loved the shade of blue that the seat had been upholstered in but I felt it was a little dark for my taste and so I set about transforming it ….. in my minds eye first of course.

I ended up choosing an array of fabrics that were not the most obvious choice for a piano stool but a good choice for the room I had in mind. I cut them in to squares which were the size that I wanted to use, not too big and not too small, and arranged them on the seat so that I could see what the finished project would look like.

Then I set about sewing each of the squares together. I sewed the ends of the squares together first, creating long strips of squares………

……and then sewed the the long strips together. Creating a giant patchwork stool cover.

I placed it on the stool and stood back. I knew that the amount of squares I had measured and cut was not going to be enough to cover the entire seat. I needed to be able to tuck the edges and the ends under tightly and secure them in place so as to get a good tight cover for the piano stool.

You can see here that it doesn’t quite make the edge of the seat.
Seeing the new seat cover in this way gave me a very good idea of how many extra squares I would need and how far they would reach under the seat in order to then be secured tightly in place. I didn’t particularly want to waste fabric or time.

This was all started before we moved house and I’m going to finish it this weekend. I had envisioned, what I thought to be, the perfect spot for this piano stool in our old house but having lived in the new house for almost a week I now know that THIS home was meant to be it’s final resting place all along.

I’ll be back with the finished article as soon as it’s complete. I’ll upload comprehensive instructions, measurements and show you how I’m stuffing the seat and giving the wooden frame a whole new look.

I’m excited about this project as I don’t believe that every kind of upholstery needs to be done by experts. It can be done by you and I in our gardens at the weekend, surrounded by friends and family. Hmmmmmmm, you have a pretty good idea of what my weekend will consist of.

Happy days!!

See you Monday.
