How To Make Curtain Pelmets

Entrance Hall Pelmets - 2 - Cherry Menlove

How to make curtain pelmets – it is actually really easy.

Here are the pelmets I made for the entrance hall to the house. I mentioned earlier that these are simply new versions of pelmets that were there before and they were so easy to put together that if I ever need pelmets again I shall definitely use this way of making them.

Here’s a closer look.

I chose some fabric that will add lightness in the Spring & Summer but look just as cosy in the Autumn & Winter. And I think it’ll work out. I’ll certainly show you pictures a little later on in the season and you’ll undoubtedly see this space with a Christmas tree in it, so we can all decided then.

But for now, I’m happy!!

This is the window behind the front door and set just to the side of my recent pigeon hole makeover.

Right, so this is how you put these babies together…..

Above the windows is a length of wood, similar to a floorboard, running the entire width of the window. The wood had one side of Velcro attached to the outer edge of it and was held to the wall using brackets.

I cut and hemmed lengths of fabric that were not only twice the width of the piece of wood above the window but were also long enough to hang about three inches below the top of the window frame once it was hemmed.

I then attached a length of pencil pleat curtain tape to the entire length of fabric using a sewing machine.

I pulled the two pieces of cord from one end of the tape to make the pleats in the fabric – keeping an eye on making sure that the pleats were fairly evenly spaced and looking good and also remembering to TIE A KNOT in the cord at the other end of the tape lest it should be pulled through never to be seen again.

I affixed, using a strong fabric glue, the opposite side of the length of Velcro to the one that was already on the wood above the window frame and placed it along the length of fabric just below the curtain tape.

I then asked Jodie to help me push the pelmets in to place. The fabric is light and the Velcro about 2 cm wide so this makes for a firm grip.

And there you have it. Not only could I take them off  and make some new ones if I fancy a change but they are also super easy to clean.

Have a truly wonderful weekend and I shall see you back here on Monday.

Just trying to figure out whether I fancy a movie this evening or to delve, FINALLY, into the first series of Lost.

I’m only about four years late but you can call me cutting edge if you like!

Lots of love
