We found this 1930′s magazine rack / log basket / something else entirely in a thrift store. It was reduced to £10 in the sale so I knew I had to have it. Why? Why did I have to have it I can hear you ask? Well, I had to have it because I find logs so boring. Essential but so very boring. It’s ALL I CAN DO not to paint all of my logs just to spruce them up a bit. And while I like their cosiness I really wanted something a touch more glam to put them in. Hence this project.
The velvet ribbon ‘thingies’ (if someone has a better name than ‘thingies’ I’d be grateful but if anyone suggests ‘corsage’ I’ll stick a pin in my eye) I made for this project could also be used on a number of other items too, to decroate a wardrobe door, a drawer, a basket, or even to dress an old handbag. Go to town with these, I know I will be. They are really easy to make and once again is a great ‘user upper’ of your ribbon stash.
So, on this very exciting Friday this is how to make ONE decorative pom pom THINGIE!!
- Cut ten 15cm lengths of thick navy blue ribbon
- Fold the individual lengths of ribbon in half and arrange them all in a flower like shape, ensuring that the open end of the ribbon pieces are in the centre of the flower shape.
- When you have your desired shape and you are happy with the way it will look, start sewing the pieces together. A couple of stitches linking each of the ribbon pieces together should do it.
- Cut 12 pieces of the light blue ribbon, each measuring 15cm in length
- Cut a further four more pieces of the light blue ribbon, measuring only 10cm this time
- Once again, fold all the pieces or ribbon in half and lay them over the existing pieces of navy blue ribbon thus creating more texture to the flower like display. Stitch all 16 folded lengths of the light blue ribbon (ends) to the middle to the existing navy blue ribbon making the finished product look like a flower, using the ribbon to act as the petals.
- When the ribbon pieces are all stitched together, place the diamante button in the centre and secure it in place, either by sewing it on or by gluing in on.
- To finish it off really nicely place a small dot of hot glue on to any pieces of ribbon that flop forward when the ‘thingie’ is in place. You don’t want it looking like a Dahilia that is past its sell by date.
Have a really great day. I was trying to find the energy to workout this morning and really found it hard to even bother. Then a song came on to my stereo……..I worked out, believe me!
But I’ll tell you more later.
