How To Sew Blanket Stitch

As promised here is a photo – by – photo demonstration on how to sew blanket stitch. If you already know how to sew this stitch you’ll know how easy and addictive it is once you’ve nailed it. If you don’t yet know how to sew blanket stitch then welcome to the most festive and cosy stitch there is!

How to sew blanket stitch - 1 - Cherry Menlove

  • Push the needle through from back to front and about a centimeter away from the edge of the blanket

  • Pull through

  • Until you reach the knot at the end of the thread

  • Now, staying on the front of the blanket, place your needle about 1 centimeter along the blanket at the same level as the start of the first stitch

  • Push the needle through the blanket but come up again by going through the loop you have thus created with the thread.

  • As you pull the thread gently through the created loop you will see the first blanket stitch start to form

  • Finish the stitch off by pulling neatly but not tightly or you’ll distort the stitch

  • To continue simply go straight back to placing the needle, front to back, a centimeter along from the top of the last stitch (as shown in the picture above)

  • Again, pull the thread under and up again to the front by pulling it through the loop created by the thread

  • Pull through neatly not tightly

  • By now you’ll clearly be able to see Blanket Stitch forming along the edge of whatever it is you are sewing. Blanket Stitch does not have to be reserved only for blankets.

  • Ahhh, a nice row, You’ll get faster and neater at this stitch in no time at all and the beauty of it is that you can do it while watching taped episodes of Oprah.

  • To finish off  - Work front to back going over the last stitch, almost like you’re sewing it again.

  • Bring it through to the back and make a nice knot
