How To Make An Applique Springtime Teapot with Free Pattern

What you will need: For the Teapot
  • Free downloadable Teapot template
  • Canvas block 30 x 30
  • Large piece of your chosen fabric big enough to cover the canvas and then attach it to the back (we chose a plain fabric for this)
  • Mixture of fabrics for each piece of the tea pot
  • Needle
  • Thread to match you fabrics (optional)
  • Your choice of embroidery thread (enough to sew around each piece of the tea pot - used a dusty pink colour DMC 152)
  • Embroidery needle
  • Fabric glue (we used Copydex)
For the Embroidery
  • Pencil (to draw your designs)
  • Your choice of coloured embroidery thread
  • Needle
Fabric Teapot Applique - 1
  • Choose a box canvas that measures – 30×30

Fabric Teapot Applique - 2

  • Cut your chosen backing fabric to size, ensuring you leave enough overflow of fabric on each side to be glued to the underside of the canvas box.
  • (Note: Do not attach the backing fabric to the canvas box until the tea pot has been sewn onto it)
  • Start by downloading and printing out the free downloadable teapot template
  • Cut out each piece of the teapot template
  • Draw around the teapot template pieces on to your chosen fabrics and cut them out

Fabric Teapot Applique - 4

  • Using the dotted lines on the template as a guide to how deep the hem should be, fold each hem over and iron down ready for stitching (note: if you do not feel confident enough to stitch the teapot pieces onto the backing fabric without hemming them first, use a tacking stitch to keep the hems in place initially and then pick them out when sections have been sewn into place with the embroidery thread – as shown.)

Fabric Teapot Applique - 5

  • When you have ironed all the individual teapot hems down (and stitched them if you prefer) place them (in order) onto the backing fabric and pin them in place ready for attaching (we used a plain white fabric for the background as the fabric we used for the teapot contrasts well)

Fabric Teapot Applique - 6

  • Sew the pieces to the backing fabric (we used an over stitch for this)

Fabric Teapot Applique - 7

  • Decorate the outside edge if you want to also. We doodled free-hand on to the backing fabric using a light pencil and then stitched over the design (for this we used split stitch)
  • Pull the backing fabric tightly over the canvas and staple or stick the fabric to the back of the canvas
  • Hang on the wall for all to see

How kind of you to post this pattern; recently my neighbor who is 90 was placed in a memory care facility. I spent many an afternoon exchanging thoughts about life with her prior to this.
I have been searching all over for a tea pot pattern to make something for her for Valaentine’s Day….now I have found it! Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart!

      Hi Sue,
So glad you like our applique tea pot. The reason you may have trouble viewing the pattern is because it is a PDF and you will need Adobe Reader downloaded onto your computer to view this.
