The Great Big Craft Question of 2012

Hello!

Welcome to the week. I hope everyone has had a great weekend and that you’re all raring to go. I am, sort of, but I have some things I’d like to sort out and organise before I feel that I can really get going. One of the things I’d like to plan for are the the Crafts that I am going to create, make and conquer for this year. I get so  many emails asking me about various different types of crafts and requests for certain projects so I thought I’d open up the floor.

I have some projects that I know I am going to work on this year but aside from those I was wondering what you’d like to see here at Cherry Menlove?

For example -

If you’d like to see more crafts using fabrics what crafts would they be? Quilts, clothing, bags, tablecloths, etc…

Home Crafts? For example, curtains, bedding, baby blankets, nappy-bags, slipcovers, upholstery etc….

Knitting? For example certain types of stitches, various projects, how to cast-on and off etc…

Crochet? For example, how-to crochet, making crochet garlands, ripple blankets, working with granny squares etc…

Technical questions? For example you may have come across terms and techniques that have never made sense. Let me help you make sense of some of this stuff in 2012. It may set you on your way to a hobby, an interest and possibly even a passion that you never give up on again.

Sewing and embroidery? For example, how to sew certain types of stitch for certain types of effect. Samplers, cross-stitch patterns, applique etc……

And any other crafts you can think of.

Like I said some of the projects you may suggest I already have on my list, some of the ones you think of may be appearing in the future in my Sainsbury’s or Making Magazine article. I work many months in advance on both of those. And some of them may even have already been made and shot for my book which comes out this year. But I’m feeling the need to plan. And this is a nice plan to make.

Thank you so much. I’m really looking forward to this year and all the ‘Makes’. And it’s much more fun creating them knowing that at least one other person, aside from me, will be get something from them.

OK, GO!!!!! I can’t wait to hear your suggestions.

I love you and thank you so much for reading.

Cherry x

I’d like to try making some of those wooden cubes with letters on them like L, O, V ,E ,or P,E,A,C,E, I saw them rearranged somewhere and they were quite impressive. (it might have even been on your site Cherry) Do you need fancy tools to make these. Would that come under “Projects with your Dad?”

  2. Flick says:

How about some nice wooden signs that seem to be in shops at the moment. I love the thought of creating my own and using words and phrases that are meaningful to me. Also a lesson in tying rafia bows round jugs and flower vases. It’s much harder than it looks. I’ve noticed you are very good at that, mine all look as though the dog has got at them. And we haven’t even got a dog.

  3. Citychick says:

Cherry some of us are just useless at crafts but love really simple stuff. I went in a home the other day that had a different fabric heart dangling from every door handle. Very pretty ones, some with beads some just layered fabric. Now that would be good for a complete beginner like me.

  4. Pam says:

I would really like a lesson in tying your perfect bows. There were a couple of requests for this before Christmas. I know it seems silly but it would help no end when you are doing presents up. Also that would be another helpful topic for me , “present wrapping”. I am buying a few varieties of mustard for my hubby and want to wrap them up because he just can’t get enough of the stuff. Any suggestions would be great. Please continue to keep the content general and not too specific that’s what makes this a great place to visit.

  5. Nikole says:

    Cherry,
I would love to see a quick craft. I have no sewing room, so something that can be completed relatively quickly is always appreciated, as I have no where to hide the mess from little hands! I love seeing simple decor that is seasonal, it adds a touch of whimsy to our home and if I already have the items on hand here in the house even better! Knit, crochet, sewing, beading, embroidery all are loved! I can’t way to see what you come up with! Thank you for all the great ideas.

  6. Citychick says:

I want to know how to make your fabulous wreathes please.

  7. Lisa Fusco says:

Cherry, I can knit very well and often have a W.i.P on the go, but i want to be able to crochet a ripple blanket and I haven’t a clue where to start!!

Also, I have kept both my children’s baby/toddler clothes and would LOVE to cut them up and make them each a patchwork quilt!! But seriously, I think that would be beyond me?? I dont own a sewing machine – so could I even attempt a patchwork quilt without one (doubt it) – and how would I go about it??

    Lisa xx

    • Shirl says:

Lisa…get a sewing machine! You don’t need a fancy one to make a quilt.
You don’t HAVE to have one to make a quilt but it will sure help A LOT and will speed things along. You can pick one up for about $100 US at a Wal-Mart.

  8. Karina says:

    Dear Cherry,

first of all, I LOVE your crafts section. I think it is very inspiring and gave me many ideas for own project. What I always like to do is recycle old clothes and any type of fabric that is not used and would be thrown out if not given a new life. From my old jeans I would like to make a skirt, I have made a purse, or little gift bags from old bedsheets.

    Best,Karina

  9. Amanda says:

Oh gosh, I wish I had time to craft more but since having Oscar I’ve gone from crocheting every single day, to taking 2 months to finish 9 rows on my ripple blanket! In my defence, hubby works shifts and we have no family where we live, so it is just me, the baby and the house most days so when I do get a little “me time” it’s usually spent in the bath! And now that I have a major project under way it’s all I can do to keep up with that… so I don’t want to make a suggestion only to see it on here and think “oh no! I really wanted to make that!!” haha

That being said, I will still be bookmarking anything I see through the year for those “one day” moments when things settle down a bit more ;) and I’m looking forward to seeing what others suggest xx

  10. Alix says:

    Hi Cherry!

I’ve been wanting to make a quilted KitchenAid cover but haven’t got a clue where to start, just something to protect it from knocks and bumps. Looking forward to any crochet and knitting tutorials too!
    Kind Regards X

  11. I would like to see all kinds of sewing projects, as im slowly trying to learn how to do the whole sewing thing – it didn’t feature at all when i was at school!!!
Also, would love to be able to crochet to make one of those blankets you used to see over bed years ago :-)
    Oh im excited already lol!!!
    Gillian xx

  12. Fiona says:

Hi I am a self taught knitter and would love to give crochet a go but whenever I look at the patterns I am just completely lost! Some kind of beginner tutorial and easy project would be ace Cherry!

  13. pat says:

Wow, I am so happy to see that crochet is topping the list so far. I am an avid crochet-er, so any projects that pop up will be amazing. I love any and all needlework, also cooking and baking, so I know that everything you post will be of interest to me Cherry. And – I am so proud of my very first, ever, ice-cream pink dahlia flower that opened up today .. prompted by the photos of your lovely blooms… so gardening as well. Looking forward to a great year following your wonderful blog!

  14. Daydreamer says:

I would vote for crochet too as I gave up some time ago after I couldn’t master it. I would also love to know how to make a roman blind if possible.

  15. Elsie says:

CROCHET!! I’ve never been able to understand how to do it! I always end up with a rather unsightly knot! x

  16. LucyT says:

I love crafts with fabric and embroidery! Would like to see useful things, though: curtains, tablecloths, tea cosies, napkins etc. x

  17. Ashleigh says:

Knitting and crochet. Particularly a series of knitting where you show how to knit squares of a particular size in different patterns, which when enough of each have been knitted, can be sewn together for a blanket. Like a patchwork, but knitted. Hope that makes sense.

  18. rachel says:

I’d like to know how to line crochet or knitting with fabric, for a hook/needle case and to make bags…I have no idea.

    • LucyT says:

Yes, I love oilcloth crafts! Particularly good for wipe clean ability with messy animals/children! x

      • Lowri says:

Oilcloth crafts would be great! I’ve got some lovely oil cloth but haven’t done anything with it as I can’t seem to get it through my sewing machine, apparently you can by a liquid to help it but some tips would be great.

  19. Lexie Bowman says:

What about oilcloth crafts? I have so much left over and so far the only project I have found is bunting…

    Any ideas Cherry!

    Lexie

  20. Susan says:

    Hi Cherry

I love making cushion covers, but I don’t know how to insert a zip to make them easy to remove for washing. Could you please give a demonstration on how to sew in zips?

    Thank you :-)

  21. JIll says:

Would love to see some Crochet, want to learn how but can’t find a good starter lit. Also some flower decorations?

  22. Gillian says:

Crochet please! I am going on a learn to crochet course soon so some easy/beginners crochet projects would be ace. Also, smaller projects are good as they are more likely to be completed and don’t cost a bomb in yarn or fabric. Thanks. xx

  23. Debs says:

I vote crochet too and a ripple blanket would be great. I have been crafting for 30 years, have become proficient in virtually every craft that I have tried but crochet eludes me still

  24. Gemma says:

    Hi Cherry,

I love crafts that use fabric and which are useful in my home, not anything that won’t be used much.

I like the sound of learning to crochet. I’d love to learn and maybe make a blanket!

I’d also like to see how you do lots of lovely stitches!

    Gemma x

P.s – I know this is not a craft, but I really enjoy your gardening and ‘growing your own’ posts. The ones where we do it together and compare as our veg is growing. Looking forward to reading those and the recipes you make with it all!!

  25. Emma says:

Cherry, I would love to see a how-to for a ripple crochet blanket, and for sewing a table cloth. Practical things that I can actually use in the home are my favourite crafts. I’d love a teapot cosy how-to as well haha sometimes I feel like a little old lady :)

    • Gill says:

Hi Cherry. Crochet for me too please. I done some years ago under my MIL’s supervision but would love to have a ‘starter’ course to get me going again. Thank you.
