Entertain & Celebrate – Saturday Morning in the Summertime
Only two days to go, TWO DAYS! I am loving the weekends at the moment. The house is still usually full of people, which we love, but it takes on an air of casualness. We still potter about over the weekend but as soon as the bell goes on a friday night that’s it! The food goes in the oven, the computers go off and in actual fact I personally get far more creative. This means that by the time sunday evening rolls around I can’t wait for monday to be able to relieve myself of all the ideas that I’ve had.
One thing we did last sunday morning, the day after we’d put the fence up, was to have breakfast outside together. A few family members had stayed over the night before as it was a long day and we all traipsed outdoors carrying various bowls and plates of food and sat down to dissect the day before.
It was still fairly early but this breakfast gathering got me thinking about how often I’m prepared to invite people over for lunch or supper (all the time) but rarely for breakfast. WHY IS THAT?
The weekends can be busier than week days on occasion. We have all experienced going back to work for a rest, but I’m coming around to the idea that if I can’t see my friends in the evening over the weekend then I’ll reverse the invite and ask them to call round in the morning.
Sunny saturday mornings are a few of my favourite things. As are cosy, autumnal saturday mornings but they have to start later because it can be so dark! At this time of year the sun is still coming up really early and if the weather is warm, as it has been here in the South / South West, it’s a great excuse to start early.
Cereal in cups, bagels on a big plate and tea in the pot. An early morning breakfast party needn’t contain any real ‘cooking’ at all. It’s not even about the food. I think it’s about saying “hello, how’s it going?”. It need only last an hour before car journey’s need to be made, children need to be taken shopping for swim suits and toilets need to be scrubbed (let’s face it they need to be done. Although in this house I do one and Robert the Husband does the other. It’s only fair to share the stinkys)
I also think it’s a good idea to take hosting a gathering in turns. Like a book group, have an early morning breakfast at a different house once or twice a month.
Then, before you know it, the hour is up and you all head off to the things you have to do. But it’s ok because you’ve seen each other. You haven’t just texted, emailed, spoken on the phone (I’m awful on the phone, I don’t like speaking on the phone at all) you have actually seen with your eyes the group of people that you love and care about.
An hour or so every other week?
I’ll take that. Yes, I’ll definitely take that!
See you tomorrow morning
