Crocus – Pushing Up & Into Spring
I love their determination. Pushing up through the leaves and the well battered soil to present my garden with this small, but no less delightful, display of colour and Springtime hope.
Crocus/Croci/Crocuses are one of the first bursts of colour that will pop up in the late winter months, among the Primroses and Snowdrops. I have a picture of me as a child bending down and pointing at a purple crocus while looking at the camera as if to say “Do you know what this is? Would you like me to tell you?”, I think I suffered from a case of earnestness. So it seems highly appropriate that here I am with my very own Croci, in my very own English garden, showing them off.
The sun came out for a wee while yesterday so I hightailed it up to the top ledge of my garden and snapped a few pics. Raindrops still intact but the force of the Crocus very much in evidence.
Something else I found rather heartwarming yesterday was to see the way a rather good looking ivy had taken hold of my fence since the last time I looked.
The fence was first painted white last Summer and as it had been untreated for so very long I think it’ll be a few more summers before several good layers of paint build up to form a solid colour. Anyway this creature will make it hard to paint this particular panel as it grows, and grows and grows.
I’ll leave it to it’s own devices for a while. I think that layering with nature in ways such as this adds depth and interest. I don’t want a flat garden, I want one with twists and turns and nooks and surprises. I want to discover things that I didn’t know were there and to realise every day that nature has a much more beautiful plan than I could ever have.
Grow, grow, grow.
