Now that we have settled in to the house and garden I can really begin to plan for the times ahead. I have found that planning is never as important than when you’re planning in the garden. Over the next few weeks I will be planting bulbs that will lie hidden in the ground right through the autumn, over Christmas, see in the New Year and even some of 2010. Until one day, perhaps in February or March, finally a green shoot will appear as if from nowhere. It is then that I become very glad that I planned where and when to put the bulbs and tried my hardest to see how it would all look in my minds eye. I’ll certainly document that process here on the site so if you’re interested that will be coming up soon!
But for now there’s some hard grafting to be done.
On Monday Robert the Husband and I began tidying up what is essentially the summer garden in order to make way for the autumn garden. We cut back some spent flowers, trimmed edges and raked together piles of leaves. Trying to keep on top of it all so that when the super dooper leaf drop begins in earnest we don’t disappear underneath it with only our legs popping out the top!
As I’m a total saddo and can occasionally display signs of anal retentiveness I enjoy working from lists. So I have come up with a list of jobs that I’m keeping an eye on for this month. It’s a simple list covering basic tasks for most gardens in the month of September and PLEASE feel free to follow it if you like.
If you’re keen on being outside but are not quite sure how to tackle preparation for autumn I hope this helps.
- Reseed bare grass patches. Must be done before the end of September
- Store away non-hardy garden furniture by the end of September
- Weed front drive and pathways
- Buy leaf hands for easy leaf pick-up
- Keep and eye on leaf drop into pond. Clear as they fall
- Clean and sort greenhouse
- Plan and purchase Spring bulbs for planting

I’ll see you back here a little later on folks. There’s most definitely a change in the air and the lamps have to go on in the hallway just a little bit earlier now.
Jeez!!!! I’ll have to order some logs for the fire soon…….YEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
