The Garden at the Start of March

colour-to-die-for-in-the-garden

This week has undoubtedly been the week that I have felt as if I’ve been let out of the house on good behaviour. I’ve walked around the garden, gone out to pick up the post, chatted with my brother who is here rabbit proofing my veg beds and once or twice just stood there and let the sun shine on my face. The temperature has gotten up to a very respectable ten degrees this week and the garden is saying an almighty “thank you”.

buttery-yellows

Every surface is sprouting with something new and for those who say that you have to wait until a little later in the year to see any real colour…well I say that they are telling little fibs.

bulbs-in-the-lawn

I have bulbs growing through the grass in the lawn which is great as all too often bulbs are consigned to edges, pots and borders and you rarely see a daffodil strewn lawn.

I’ll take another shot of this area when they’ve all woken up. Come on, surely you should be up by now? This is just lazy!

As I mentioned, my baby brother has been helping me out in the paddock lately. We have rabbits in this area and rabbits will LOVE the things I’ll be growing in my veg beds over the next few months. So we cordoned off an area around the raised beds and are busy erecting a rabbit proof fence. Rabbit proof fencing is simply wire fencing that goes a certain way in to the ground and then, hopefully, the rabbits are unable to even burrow underneath it. But the thought of having wire encircling my soon to be beautiful cottage / kitchen garden is too much and almost had me taking up smoking again.

Luckily I realised that a simple white wooden fence would all but hide the wire and would help me maintain the ‘Hamptons Chic’ aesthetic that I was aiming for here in West Sussex.

Let’s just see how this all works out shall we?

Nathan has been very good and has only ever widened his eyes once when I said that all of the posts had to be re-cut to include pointy tops. It’s at times like these when being the oldest sibling pays dividends and makes up for when your mum and dad would try out their parenting techniques on you and you alone and not really bother with the others!

Here are two of my beautiful stepover apple trees. I am in the process of training them to grow sideways and yet remain just one foot tall. I will show you how I am doing this with lots and lots of pictures very soon.

paddock-bird-feeders

And the latest additions are…….bird feeders!

We have a cat. You know this. Her name is Boo, she is spoilt, but she is my first born and I knew I was pregnant without even taking a test by the way her behaviour around me changed. She has not been out much during the cold weather but is starting to scratch at the back door again.  This means that the 10,375,000 bird feeders we have hanging about two feet from outside the back door have to be moved. We can’t feed the birds all Winter only to let the cat out on them as soon as the sun shines again. They’ll never trust us again and may even gang up and have a little birdy protest  with banners and everything or some such horror.

So we’re slowly moving all of the feeders to a place where the birds will be safe to eat in peace.

I’m back tomorrow with another installment of my pregnancy diary. It is so much fun writing these entries and this week has been eventful.

Make sure you pop back and take a look. I’m a bona fide fatty now! Woo hoo!!!!
