Oh I love it! Making use of nature’s bounty is what country living is all about. When we lived in the Wilds, we would be given several braces every year. I would pluck and DH would ‘pull’ and cut into manageable pieces ~ neither of us were in the least bit squeamish. Pheasant is really tasty ~ my fave was always Pheasant Pie as per an old Habitat calendar recipe. Delicious!

  2. Yvonne says:

Your comments crack me up. My first thought was “oi Cherry, this will get you in a lot of trouble”. I don’t really understand why people are so anti-meat. We are animals too, right? We are on the top of the food chain. If we don’t eat those birds something else will. I think it’s a beautiful picture, I do agree that it is a bit out of “Cherry context” and I do have a problem wit the fact that I know and like someone so well who can pluck a bird. LOL!!

  3. Mrs O says:

I think its a beautiful shot of two stunning birds, fascniating o watch in hte air and walking in the undergrowth, and lovely to eat too. Now I’m a city girl I weirdly really miss helping dad and my sister pluck/prepare any game that comes our way and then eating it

  4. Countrygirl says:

What will happen to those sanctimonious readers when the recession really hits? We will All be growing our own produce then and maybe even cooking a pigeon or two. If it’s a choice between that and starving, I know what I would do.

    • Deirdre says:

Maybe when the recession really hits you can discover other healthy food choices that don’t include meat, which is rather expensive. Lots of lovely legumes, grains, dairy products and fruit and veg don’t involve the killing of animals but provide wonderful meals for a large percentage of the world’s population.
And we are not ‘sanctimonious’ because we don’t like/agree with something. Sanctimonious is actually meant to be used in a religious context.

  5. annmarie says:

enjoy, i tried pheasant for the first time last year and loved it, especially with a sweet cherry sauce that accompanied it. looking forward to your recipe. x

  6. Amy says:

Goodness! Cherry cooks meat all the time – - where do the folks who are complaining about the picture think it comes from? Actually a rather interesting photo in composition and color – - can’t wait to see the yummy dish you make. :-)

  7. Gemma says:

Fab can`t wait, i think that its important to use what is around us especialy when you live in the countryside why not use the FOOD god has provided, and never better than fresh from his garden.

  8. Belle says:

Do any of you wear leather shoes or carry leather bags. Where do you think that comes from?

  9. Paty Z says:

I´ve never eaten a pheasant and will look forward for the recipe (maybe I can use turkey) but I think that today´s post turned to another direction.
I don´t have any problem with the picture, it doesn´t matter if it was a turkey, chicken, geese or duck. Or a pig or a cow etc. We must be thankful that we have food to eat and in the other hand we should be responsible that nothing goes to waste (because that would be a problem) There´s nothing wrong with the photo, that is also part of “the stuff of life” don´t you think?

  10. Brenda Gibbons says:

That is the most disgusting photo – you should be ashamed of yourself. I used to look forward to your blog but I’m turning off now and I will not be ordering your book.

    Shame on you.

    • Amy says:

I’m still just amazed at this kind of reaction over showing a dead bird on Cherry’s website. She’s shown dead birds here all the time – - they just happened to be COOKED birds. ;-)

I actually say shame on YOU for judging her for one photo you disagree with – - for reasons that seem to be a double standard for what you expect from this website.

Cherry’s website is BEAUTIFUL – - and she’s obviously a kind, warm-hearted, lovely person. Who happens to believe in eating meat – - like so many of the rest of us!

      • Posy Pea says:

I find this a ridiculous reaction. This is what a dead bird looks like. The photo is in no way ‘disgusting’ and I will certainly be ordering your book! xx

    • patricia says:

That’s OK, Brenda ! I’ll be ordering two (or maybe more) Hehe. ;)

    • Debbie-S says:

I really hope that comments like this don’t upset Cherry too much. Brenda seems to be in the minority.

Cherry we all love you, reading your blog each day is like getting a letter from a long lost friend. May you continue regardless of the few negative comments left here.

Has Robert had his results yet? Has Jodie had her baby?

Love to you and your lovely family.
      xx

    • Meredith Wnek says:

It is hardly a disgusting photo. These birds had a natural life. Go to a corporate poultry farm…ever eaten chicken you bought from the grocer??? Get over it.

  11. Lisa Fusco says:

    Cherry,

I have no problem with this post at all – it’s just as quick for anyone to click “off” the picture if they dont like what they see!!

Thought I’d just post to say – my sister was due a baby around the same time as Jodie (I did post about it when you announced Jodie’s pregnancy) – well she had her baby last Thursday – a girl – Lola Rose – 7lb 4oz – she’s adorable!! My first “real niece/nephew” and I can’t believe quite how much I love her!! Any news on Jodie??

    Lisa xx

  12. Debbie-S says:

I have to admit pheasant pie is one of my all time favourite meals.

    Love to you all.

  13. MimiG says:

Never plucked a pheasant – plucked a wild turkey my then husband killed. Took a lot longer than I hoped and the feathers certainly weren’t worth keeping!
The picture doesn’t bother me, just part of life. Your kids are getting much healthier food this way than by going to the supermarket and buying something wrapped in cellophane or out of a can.
    Just saying………..
Actually, all the colors in the photo are quite lovely.

  14. annied says:

Forgot to add that picture it is CRIMINAL,…. it just shouldnt be allowed, not the pheasant – how good Cherry’s twin bearing backside looks in jeans : ))

  15. Sandra Gillanders says:

Beautiful birds they were! I can’t complain though, I eat meat and the reality isn’t very pretty sometimes. Love to see your pheasant when it’s already for the table. Never eaten a pheasant dinner, does it taste like chicken?

  16. annied says:

    Cherry,

Loving reading the comments today in response to ‘dead bird’. No its not pretty flowers in a vase or fab pics of the twins or corners of your home and garden but a ‘dead bird’ and so what, birds die and if we are that way inclined we prepare them and eat them, its lifes wonderful and totally natural cycle. This blog beautiful and all that it is, is pretty much grounded by reality – remember the poo in the bath post, so today you are preparing a pheasant for eating, thats what YOU are doing and you share what you do with us and I LOVE every blog post, thats just my humble opinion !

  17. abby says:

superb, how delicious. Preparing an animal for the table has to be one of my favourite jobs this time of year :) have fun xx

  18. Pheasant season started on 1st October, its pretty normal to see one of those sitting in our cold room waiting to be plucked. I think its hilarious that ‘townie’s are so squemish about these things!

    • abby says:

exactly, if your’e prepared to eat it you should be prepared to at least understand and not be silly about where it comes from! x

      • Deirdre says:

That is a bit disrespectful, Abby. We are not being ‘silly’ about it, just saying that it is unexpected seeing a dead animal on Cherry’s post and not something that everyone is comfortable with. I am not actually prepared to eat it or any other meat and I was raised on a farm so have seen it all when it comes to the life cycle and animals and understand it.

  19. Deirdre says:

Eeekkk! I’m with Fleur! I am certainly squeamish and didn’t want to see that picture. Oh Cherry I so look forward to your posts and your beautiful photos and I know people eat meat and animals get killed but I would never have thought I would see a pic of a beautiful dead bird on your blog.
Otherwise, hope all is well! Love to your babies. X

  20. Sarah says:

Oooh, that’s a bit of a confronting picture.

  21. patricia says:

Goodness, Fleur. People eat meat. No need to go all hypocritical and coy on Cherry.
Country Living is just what her website does portray and that includes country style dinners.

    • Fleur says:

Goodness, Patricia. We are all entitled to our own opinion…aren’t we?!

It’s just not what I expected (or wanted) to see when hoping to find a new post from Cherry.

  22. Bex says:

Morning Cherry – much as I am a bit squeamish about the idea of plucking birds etc, I do think it’s important that we remember where our food comes from.
Any news on Jodie’s baby yet?
    Have a good week. Bex.x

  23. Sophie says:

Great photo… I love this time of year when the shooting season starts! Enjoy plucking!

  24. sadie says:

you should be in burlesque, you’re a terrible tease! :D

    pheasants have such beautiful feathers.

Have a glorious start to the week :) x

  25. Fleur says:

Sorry Cherry, but that’s plain awful! That picture doesn’t portray your website at all to me!

    Fleur
