The guest room in any house can so often get forgotten, especially if its on another floor or even away from the house altogether. In my home I am guilty of sticking the clothes horse in there as its a good place to dry the clothes and its out of the way & hidden from view.
But I have to be honest with you I do think that if you have a guest room that lies empty for most of the time then an opportunity to make your decorative mark on yet another room has been missed. Last Spring I took the room under my wing and freshened it up with some objects and colours that I knew would see both the room and any guests it hosted right through Spring AND Summer.
After a thorough clean I picked out some duck egg blue bedding – a real departure for me as I always go for white – and added even more colour using blankets and cushions at both ends.
I rethought the shelving in the room and placed the most colourful books I could find upon those shelves. I had been fortunate enough to find several Beatrix Potter books in a thrift store recently and they sat pretty in their multi-coloured glory.
The room underwent a lightening and freshening process that also relieved it of the very Winter feel that it had been carrying.
Another thing I made sure I did was to clean the windows in that room. As it’s at the back of the house it seems to get a lot of the garden dust and dirt gathering on the sills and the panes. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! When the spring sunlight finally shone through and on to the guest bed I felt like checking in a guest myself.
