It’s All White Now

Oh happy day (oh happy day)
Oh happy day (oh happy day)
When Jesus washed (when Jesus washed)
When Jesus washed (when Jesus washed)
Jesus washed (when Jesus washed)
Washed my sins away (oh happy day)
Oh happy day (oh happy day)

This was the song for this morning. I have no idea why it came into my head to sing for the babies but I think it had something to do with starting the day off well and knowing that if that happened then a wonderful day would follow in its footsteps. Of course then I tuned the radio on and I heard ……

My baby he don’t talk sweet
He ain’t got much to say
But he loves me, loves me, loves me
I know that he loves me anyway

And maybe he don’t dress fine
But i dont really mind
Because every time he pulls me near
I just want to cheer

Lets hear it for the boy
Lets give the boy a hand
Lets hear it for my baby
You know you go to understand

Whoa, maybe he’s no romeo
But he’s my lovin one-man show
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Let’s hear it for the boy

And the day got even better!

Anyway, on with today’s post……….

There’s a saying that says that food always looks best on white china. I agree. Of course some of my tableware is not pure white, some of it is patterned, but I do agree that food looks even more delicious on white.

However, I’d also like to take this opinion one step further today and say that I think that all dining should be done on a white table also.

Controversial!

But this photo shows me why and I’ve fallen back in love with a dining table and chair set that I had grown increasingly less fond of over the years as I began to think of them a rather dowdy.

A before and after shot of the chairs.

And the table top in the process of being sprayed.

And here’s the finished product in all of its light deliciousness.

It has transformed the dining room. The whole room is lighter and brighter. More of my linens now match the set and ALL of my china and tableware come to life on this chalky white background.

*Sigh*

I love it.

I sent Robert the Husband a text at work asking if he was cool with me doing this as this was one of the first pieces of furniture that we bought for our first house together. He was totally cool with it as he trusts me now and understands my need to live in a house that resembles a cloud. Something to do with all being more heavenly, at least that’s what I tell him when I buy yet another pot of white paint.  It was great seeing his face when he saw the end result.

“It makes the room so light and big” said he as he stepped in from work one evening.

As you can see I’ve got four vases on my new white table and they are stuffed with Dahlias and a few roses. If you plan on planting anything for your garden next year you must go for Dahlias. They are the best cut flower in the world and I have had a constant stream of them from June until now and they are still going strong.

Believe me when I say that purchasing a few Dahlia tubers will save you far more money than if you were to visit the florist on a weekly basis and you get to beam with pride and say “I grew them” when people compliment you on such perfectly formed flowers.

Pink, white and green. My favourite colour combination.

I have been making a list lately of all the people that I want to have round for supper. Friends that have been terribly neglected since the babies came in to our lives. But now that we are getting so much more settled as a family it is time to throw open the doors once again and send the invites out.

Long evenings spent chewing the cud over candlelight and a good Barolo. With friends, hearty autumnal food and good conversation. In a few weeks time when the weather has turned the log burner will be blazing and our cheeks will be red from the heat it throws out in to the room. And we’ll leave the table with cries of “Oh no, leave that, we’ll clear it up later. Come on let us go into the living room and snuggle with dessert”

And so the table will be left until it serves us again next time. Which is the fun part. Why? Because now it is white and a completely blank canvas I can dress it a million and one different ways. So I apologise a million and one times for the dining table post that will be coming your way.

Have a wonderful day my friends and do tell me in the comments section if there are any table set-ups that you’d like to see here on cherrymenlove.com. We’ve got so many wonderful things to celebrate in the coming months culminating with Christmas that I’d LOVE to have a go at some of your suggestions.

I look forward to working with you!

Lots of love for the day,
Cherry

  1. Hi Cherry,
Your table and chairs look revitalised and dreamy in white…I am a white wood fiend and a paint sprayer would make so much sense rather than the usual laborious paint brushes! If you wouldn’t mind please could you advise the brand of your sprayer so that I can get my paws on one?!
    Thank you so much

Love what you’ve done with the table and chairs – great idea & it’s now inspired me too. However, I would like to do paint some pine bedroom furniture & the pieces look like they’ve been lacquered. Any idea how I should prep them? Do I sand or just paint with an undercoat? Any help would be very much appreciated! Love the site – V inspiring!

      Hi Janet,
Although my table was treated (I think it was an oil as opposed to a varnish/lacquer) the look and feel of the wood was very natural. I only lightly sanded the top of the table but other than that I didn’t do any other prep other than wipe it down thoroughly all over (including the chairs) to get rid of any grease or marks.
I then used a paint spray to whiten the table and chairs as this gave it more thorough and neater finish.
How you prepare you table before painting will depend on its finish.
      Hope this helps.

      Cherry.

LOVE the table… wonder if I could paint mine… but maybe not, as it’s antique mahogany…. hmmmmm!!!! Lovely to read all your posts – I’ve just got back from Spain (which wasn’t so sunny as it turns out!)… should have gone to Clovelly!!!! :)

Cherry I am hosting a series of ladies meetings in the new year and would like to personalise the table with little surprise blessings, not favours exactly. Have you got any ideas. It won’t be sit down meals, but just a table full of good hearty food. I would also appreciate some ideas for hot winter dishes that are easy to make and serve. Not chilli con carne, I always do that. My table is an eight seater so I have quite a lot of room. Also some New Year style table decorations. Thanks. Roxy

      Hi Roxy,
We have lots of Autumn/Winter dishes coming up soon including some soups – these might be perfect to serve at your ladies meetings. Perhaps leaving a pretty little box of homemade truffles (find the recipe in Food & Recipes) as a gift for your ladies may be the answer, take a look at our Entertain and Celebrate section, you may find just the thing there
      Good luck with your meetings.

Such a pretty dining table! I told my hubby I wanted to get white denim covers made for a wing chair. He just said, “whatever you want honey.” Wow! What book has be been reading? But….I haven’t sent the chair to the upholsterers yet and now it’s being totally dominated by a pair of Westies. (at least they’re white but they get very dirty) Maybe I am nuts for wanting white? I want it everywhere but with 3 or 4 dogs always lounging in the living room I wonder. Green, cream and pink is my favorite combination too, Cherry.

Ih it looks gorgeous Cherry!Love your table decorations too!I’ve just painted our hall and stairs in a creamy white and I love it! It really feels like’me’, if you know what I mean!

  7. Morgan says:

    Your table looks great!!
What kind of paint did you use and how will you protect it from chipping and wear???

  8. Vicki says:

It turned out lovely! As for what I’d like to see, a really proper English tea.
One church ladies or an afternoon garden club meeting might put together.

Oh you are so lucky to have this understanding, in your husband. :-) But you know that!

    Gentle hugs…

Oh my goodness – this is sooo strange! I’m actually in the process of painting my bedroom furniture white – literally, I’m sitting here with paint-splattered hands! lol! In my case, the furniture is leftovers from the divorce that, like me, needed a make-over! What paint did you use, Cherry? At the moment I’m just undercoating with ordinary white emulsion, but I’m starting to think I quite like the effect. I’ve already done the hall table in Farrow and Ball’s Slipper Satin (which is just gorgeous).

  13. LadyV says:

I need to do this with our table and chairs!! Tell me though, were yours ‘raw’ wood, or that coated kind (do you know what I mean??)? Ours are ‘coated’ and I~m not sure if paint would stick!!!!

Love the table – it makes such a huge difference! I am currently trying to convince my mum to let me do something similar to pine bedroom furniture in her house, i may have to show this to her to get her another step closer to saying yes..

  15. J. says:

The table is gorgeous! Well done. Love the polka dot candles and the vases full of flowers. I have one dahlia in my yard that I have planted and am eager for more. They’re so gorgeous!
I’m having a garden party in a few months (I live south of the equator so our seasons are reversed from yours). I have a set of French blue tablecloths and was thinking about decorating the tables in the tones of a Monet waterlily painting–maybe hydrangeas? lilies? Blues, purples, green, touch of pink and white. . . .would love to see you do a version first to give me ideas :)
    Enjoy your beautiful day.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE what you have done and it is totally inspiring me to do the same w/ my dining table and chairs, our chairs are mismatched (and not in a good way) the table doesn’t make me happy any more and is always covered up w/ a cloth anyway. Wonder if my husband will notice if I spray everything white while he’s gone on his business trip …. Hmmmm, the mind wonders :)

  17. Kate Harper says:

Oh, I just love the white dining table and chairs, Cherry!

If I had my way, my whole house would be decorated in varying shades of white. (It has taken over 20 years for my husband to understand that white is not just one shade!)

    Love it, love it!

    Kate
