Working At Home

“They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got
Till it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot”

We sing in the mornings, well, I sing and the babies stare at me, and this was the song sung today. Nothing gets my day off to a better start than a good ole’ singalong and you can’t go wrong with Big Yellow Taxi.

There’s a spring in my step this morning as nearly all of the washing from the holiday has been done, the house is almost free of Christmas after the magazine shoot and I’ve recently made some purchases that I’m very excited about.

Exhibit A.

I have a room in my house that I like to think of as my Vintage room. Do you remember the blanket cupboard that I created last Winter?

Well that cupboard is in this room, my vintage room.

I have been struggling to find some curtains that will suit this room and on Sunday they popped up and landed in my lap. I met Sue from Dairy House Antiques on Sunday. We were driving home from Devon and it was on our way, so to pop in and meet the lovely Sue and find a veritable treasure trove of beautiful items for my home was an absolute treat. Sue also makes a GRRRREAT cup of tea and if you’re in the area, or even if you’re not, then you must stop in and see all that she has gathered together and put under the roof of this old dairy. I could hear myself  ”oohing” and “aahing” as I was walking around and imagining most of the items sitting in my own home was not hard.

I also refuse to do anything other than support women like Sue who have gone out there, grafted doing what they love and have built a business around it. The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in so many of us and must be encouraged.

Sue is a powerhouse and The Dairy House ROCKS!

As soon as the curtains are up in this room and I’ve done a wee bit more tinkering I’ll show you how it’s all coming along. But I’ve fallen madly in love with this bedroom and I’m excited about pottering until my heart is content.

Another project that I am finally getting down to is a makeover on this vintage trunk. I bought two of these last Summer and have only just got around to deciding what I want to do with them. They are wonderful as tiny wee wardrobes for babies and that is exactly what I am going to continue using it as. But it needs a bit of a face-lift and some darling fabric to help it along, so once again…..watch this space.

I’ve also been looking out all of my vintage eiderdowns. They’ll come in handy when I settle myself on the sofa to enjoy my annual screening of Pride & Prejudice one Sunday afternoon. Robert the Husband has PROMISED that he’ll watch it with me this year as so far he’s managed to avoid ever seeing it. This is odd to me as I have been with him for almost seven years and I have watched it almost every year that he has known me. Slippery little sucker isn’t he!

Sorry, couldn’t help myself.

Do you remember the collective gasp that went up from women (and men, I’m sure) when Darcy emerged from the lake in his wet white shirt? It has to be, hands down, the finest moment in British television history and one that I know I’ll never forget. And I know I must have written about this scene so many times. Perhaps that’s why Robert isn’t that keen on watching it? Hmmmmm, things are finally becoming clear.

Anyway, with the onset of Autumn a house like this has to have a good supply of logs. Last week we had our log man deliver a huge pile. We got two different sizes and he has placed them quite far from the house. This is fine but we now have to get them closer to the house and in the dry or they won’t burn when we need them to.

However, building piles of logs like the one you can see at my front door, is a quintessential autumn activity here in the country and as it’s so physical it is also fabulous for keeping you fit and strong.

Although the spiders that bury themselves in log piles are not my best friends. However I ALWAYS, ALWAYS check a log for any kind of animal or bug before throwing it on the fire. I couldn’t bear to kill anything in such a way whether I like them or not.

I am also drying Hydrangea heads over the AGA at present. I have many Hydrangea plants dotted about my garden but unfortunately almost every one of them was ‘got’ by a late frost that arrived in the Spring and they have produced very little flowers this year.

These beauties came from Robert’s mum and they’re gorgeous. As you can tell I haven’t taken the fairy lights down from above the AGA since the magazine shoot. I really don’t see the point. It’ll be getting darker and darker here in the evenings and it’ll be nice to have extra light in the kitchen. So they can stay put for the time being. They also make great Hydrangea Hangers as you can see.

I’m spending most of the day in the kitchen today as I’ve got the cooking bug this week and my lovely man from Ocado in Lemon Van has just delivered all of the ingreeds to satisfy my current burst of culinary inspiration.

You know that I read cook books like I would any work of fiction and to spend only twenty minutes with a portion of my cookbook library is time very well spent. Especially at this time of year when there is so much good food in season. Well, they don’t have Harvest Festival at this time of year for nothing.

So it would seem that in the coming weeks I shall be doing a lot of pottering, a lot of cooking, a lot of painting, a lot of sewing and watching a little bit of tele. I’ll also be doing some shopping as it has occurred to me that now I am not pregnant and it is a little cooler I have no clothes.

Two people I don’t think I’ll be taking along with me for my shopping trip are these two reprobates!

Er, are stripes in this season?

Is it normal for father and son to dress alike?

I thought that was left for pageant queens and their mothers!

Mummy, help me!!!!!

Son, I’ll rescue you from ‘Matching Outfit’ hell as soon as Daddy has stopped looking so pleased with himself.

I may be some time.

I love you, and I thank you for reading. May your day bring you more than you could ever have imagined.

That is the cutest father and son picture ever! They look like an advert for Christmas candy! I am so glad to finally hear of someone other than myself who reads cook books like fiction. I’ve taken a lot of ribbing over the years for my “fictional reading library”. I joined an online bake along group with this my latest book, Rose’s Heavenly Cakes, and it’s the most used book on my shelves, signed by the author.
“Oh, I see you’ve been baking from it!” Rose said at the signing. It’s a disgrace really, but a great testimonial.

Just imagine having a son-in-law who looks not dissimilar to Mr Darcy. I now struggle to enjoy Pride and Prejudice as it now seems vaguely inappropriate to be apparently lusting after your son-in-law (however lovely he might be!)

Ah, Mr. Darcy! Funny, I was just thinking that I might watch P&P today — woke up to thunderstorms this morning, it’s dark and quiet and it just seems like a perfect day for it.

    Love your stripey boys!

Oh the autumn bug has hit us hard… I haven’t stopped crocheting and dreaming of all the warm creations I can make since last week and Tim keeps coming home and saying “smell that air… it smells of autumn and the promise of bonfires!” bless.

Can’t wait to see how all your projects come about – happy autumn xx

Lovely post – Ned looks like he is going to be a very intelligent little thing – very alert! If you like interesting, vintage look linens then its worth checking out Greengate http://www.greengate.dk/ if you have not done so already – really gorgeous quilts, quite pricey but very good quality. Also Damask does beautiful lines -http://www.damask.co.uk
