It’s finished. The makeover on what used to be a dull brown trunk has been completed. Here’s what it looked like before.
Now it’s pale blue with a linen quilted lining and a pale green trim.

All of the clothes are back in their place and not on the spare bed. This trunk is specifically for vests, baby-grows and clothes they can bum about in. As the trunk stays open for most of the time it makes it easy to just reach in and grab an item when the projectile vomit has just been deposited on to a brand new outfit.

Yes, Ned, I’m talking to you. I know you didn’t like those corduroy trousers but you didn’t have to vomit on them.

Instead of a big brown blob in the middle of the nursery now we have a light blue blob. Much nicer.

It’s not perfect as time is of the essence usually and more often than not there is a baby kicking you in the leg when you’re trying to do something that requires a steady hand.

But we got there.

This little paint job has made the nursery a nicer place to be.

Because we sometimes hang out in here quite a bit. Sitting on a knee or laying on a rug. Or, in Ned’s case, throwing up Exorcist style. Who would have thought that such a small amount of milk could go such a long way.
He’s OK though, I should say that right now, there is nothing more sinister than the fact that he got a little bouncy after his breakfast. The smile I got from him when I was cleaning myself, him and the walls down afterward assured me of that.

Oh yes, much better.
Of course now that this project is finished the fingers start drumming and my eyes begin to dart about the rooms looking for some more mischief to make.
And then I remember Christmas is a mere 6 weeks away and I realise that all the mischief I need is sitting in boxes marked ‘Baubles’.
Ahhhhhhh, the timing couldn’t be better.
I love you. Thank you for reading.

It looks lovely. What kind of paint did you use?
Hi Cherry,
You’re stuff is lush! Just wanted to ask, did you make the quilted linen or buy it in? I can’t seem to find any information anywhere! If you bought it, could you tell me where, and if not, how does one make it? Thanks very much xxx
Hi Monnie,
We made the quilted linen lining from from some left over linen fabric we had in our stash. We then used some wadding (cut to size) and wrapped it in the linen, stitched it together, thus creating the quilted effect, then edged it with some pretty green ribbon.
Hope this helps.

Love it! You are very clever and resourceful, and funny, I might add!

I love that trunk makeover! I would totally attempt something similar for my baby daughter, but as my mother would have it, she has too too many clothes to fit in one suitcase.
The trunk looks lovely – so much nicer than the boring old dresser I have my baby’s clothes in. Your twins live in a pretty story-book word (from my non-crafty perspective!)
Earlier today I had the nicest conversation with Wendy at BBC Homes and Antiques. I have not been able to find a bookstore or magazine seller anywhere here in Toronto who carries their magazine so I sent them an email. They don’t have an online ordering option but they sent me a friendly note and a phone number to call. I called Wendy this morning and for a totally reasonable cost she is sending me two copies of their December issue. One for me and one for my Grandma’s Christmas stocking. Can’t wait to see more of your lovely home!
Thanks for writing every day. I thoroughly enjoy ever word and every picture. I think our boys have the same look of patience (for Mom) and future devilment that would make them good chums. All the best.

Really quite lovely! I love the idea of being able to quickly reach in and grab a fresh outfit. Babies go through a shocking amount of clean clothes.
Lovely.
I have an old trunk that I’ve wanted to convert to a toy chest, but the top is quite heavy. I worry about 4-year-old and 20-month-old fingers if it accidentally slams shut. Any suggestions?
who/what is J. Pars… (what you’re stencilling on the suitcase)?
(sorry, curiosity killed the blog reader
Hello Tine,
To be perfectly honest, we have no idea whom J. Parsons is! We bought the trunk at a thrift shop so it could either be the name of the person that owned it originally or the name of the company that actually made the trunk. We like it so much though that we decided to make a feature of it and paint it bright pink.!

Oh I had to laugh… my very first day in a nursery saw me being projectile vomited on… unfortunately that was actually due to a stomach bug and I caught it two days after starting (not a great start to a new job, I must say). But I learnt that being vomited on was all part of the baby process, as was having snot wiped on your shoulder as you gave them the first hug of the morning. Aren’t they just the most generous, sharing absolutely everything with you
The trunk looks gorgeous, Cherry, well done.
If you didn’t say anything else I would still look in every day just to see photos of Ned. Poor boy is totally oblivious about what you are saying about him so he can take it all in good part. I think the nursery is delightful. If you’re looking for projects come round to my house I have a million dull pieces of furniture that need livening up but I’m too old and lazy. However I love watching your transformations and I will get inspired one day I know.
