I’ve had this knitting box since 2006! It has followed me from my flat in London, to my first house with Robert and now resides here with us in West Sussex. I love the shape and I love how light it is. But I didn’t EVER like the finish. It was also no use to me as only a knitting box. I love to knit in front of the telly but I also love to sew and craft and as I knew that this box would undoubtedly live in the Living Room I needed it to be a little more functional. Which is why I added a very easy to make pin cushion on the inside of the lid. We all have to multitask from time to time and my knitting box is no different.

When painting the box I used two coats of white undercoat/primer and finished with two further coats of New White (Farrow & Ball) in full gloss.

To make the pin cushion I used a piece of wadding that was approximately 8 inches wide and 4.5 inches high. I folded it over and roughly sewed it all up making a type of ‘wadding cushion’. I then placed my little cushion in to a piece of fabric that was 11 inches wide and 9 inches high. I folded the edges inwards and sewed them in place to hold them together.

I added a wee flourish of ric-rack across the diagonal and a button in the middle. It was stuck, using a hot glue gun, on to the inside of the sewing box lid and will now reside there forever more as a very handy pin cushion.

I like projects like this. One’s that are useful and pretty at the same time. One’s that involve pieces of furniture that I wasn’t too fond of to start with but now I love. I also like projects that don’t cost an arm and a leg or take weeks to complete.

Projects, that when finished, give me the feeling that I have just gone out and spent a whole heap of cash on something incredibly exciting for my house. When in actual fact it was there all along just waiting to be made a fuss of. And we all need to be made a fuss of once in a while. It’s how we flourish!
In other news…..

The weaning onto solids seems to be going well…..clearly!
Note to self – Cover the place in plastic before allowing Anaïs to hold her own spoon!
I love you and wish you all a fantastic day.

Oh this is divine Cherry! I emailed my darling hubby a link to this lovely post and he is now watching one on eBay for me to makeover! I need one of these little beauties next to my favourite armchair so I can craft, knit and sew whenever I please. Thank you so much for the wonderful idea and inspiration

I love the new white look the knitting box, but I also love the piece as it was – is is a junkshop find or can you reveal your suppliers, Cherry??
So sweet Cherry!!!!!
Cherry, the blog posting is simply adorable!! White paint is simply a miracle worker at times, but most of all, the jam-faced darlings are what made my day!
Thank you for sharing!

What a darling idea! We have scads of knitting bags scattered about and it’s ridiculous. A small piece of furniture is much more sensible. Anais is adorable! I go through this same routine five days a week with my now nine month old granddaughter. She, too, has ideas about who gets to hold the spoon or cup and/or both. I’m always grabbing something to appease her; spatulas, plastic bowls, anything. I feel like a scene out of Ghostbusters when we finish. I’ve been slimed with prunes, squash, apricots, sweet potatoes, etc etc etc.
I am about to aquire (as I mentioned I would like it someday) a old desk from my dad – its very cute, but like your knitting box i don’t really like the wood. So i am planning on sprucing it up with a coat of lovely F+B paint, my only problem is where to put the blooming thing! I wanted it for my new house, but seeing as I haven’t sold my existing one I am a little pushed for space haha!
None the less i’m sure i will love it when it is done and in its new home, wherever that may be…

I love any kind of pin cushion, I am addicted to them. Wherever I go I will buy one, I have about 50 of them now; can I have yours too to add to my collection…
I’ve just taken up knitting. I think your pin cushion idea is marvelous. Do you have any knitting patten for children’s scarfs ?

Lovely make over too.
I love that kind of makeover too. My husband never knows what he’s going to come home too, I’m always covering furnture in paint and scuffing it up to give it an old look!
Love, love, LOVE the photo of your little girl. In my book, the more gunk on the face, the more they enjoyed it! ;o)
