Dining Room Shelves – Before & After

Well hi there!

I’ve got a little before and after for you today.

This is the Dining Room in the house we are currently living in.

It’s a beautiful bright, square room. It’s sunny during the day and gorgeously cosy in the Winter. I love the fireplace and I wish we’d had more time in this place to do what I had planned. Which was put in a log burner and a mantle place. But you can’t go through life wishing for things like that so I’ve decided to be happy with what I did achieve.

Which was to put in new shelves. I can’t take the credit for the idea of having shelves in the alcoves  as my lovely landlord already had some in place. I just decided to put other ones up as the moment we moved in I realised how useful they were and I can’t resist having a fiddle.

My dad and I made them from plywood and chipboard and they were painted using Wimbourne White by Farrow and Ball.

The shelves currently look like this but what I think I love most about them is that they are really versatile. For instance, they looked like this at Christmas……

Having lit them with white stringed fairy lights all the room needed  were a couple of candles for the table (out of shot) and the lights from the tree in the corner and the room was all set.

They are so neutral that if I’m feeling all “Hampton’s Chic’ I can dress them up white on white. But in a heartbeat I can pull all of my Easter decorations out of the loft and they are immediately a lot more colourful, albeit less sophisticated.

But that’s not always a bad thing, especially with twenty month twins running around throwing remote controls for fun (!)

I wonder what the alcoves at the new place have in store for me?

I love you and thank you so much for reading. If you like to chat there are some cracking conversations taking place on my Facebook page. Do join in. Links below.

Cherry I’ve been reading your blog all the way from Australia for about six months now and can’t wait for your book to be released.
My comment is about the alterations you’ve made in your rental house. We don’t do that here…because the house belongs to someone else you MIGHT change the curtains or ask for permission to hang a few picture hooks, but I have never heard on anyone making structural changes such as what you did in your kitchen or putting up these shelves, even though I am sure they will be fairly easy to remove. If you do get to make changes they are generally totally at your own expense unless it was something the owner intended on doing anyway or had to do in order to keep the house fit for renting. Its a very interesting difference…..here we just tend to have to put up with ugly paint jobs and unsuitable storage. Love your blog xx

Dear Cherry, just brought in some forsythia to force, however the weather is cold wet and threatening snow. The swans are still here and saw 16 eagles in one tree the other day! Your room looks lovely and peaceful,so pretty. Have a great March the 1st Rabbit day. Mary Anne from the foot of Chuckanut Drive
