Finding the Fireplace

This fabulous fireplace is in the room the Robert and I are currently sleeping in. I say currently because there is a room that would be better for us as it has more storage space but this room is opposite the children and we want to be near them right now.

Anyway, I was delighted to see this little gem, in perfect condition, as we were taken around the house on one of our viewings.

I’m not sure whether the photos do it justice or not. The colours are muted and pale and I love the size of it. Small, neat and fairly unobtrusive but unmistakeably there!

There are pale duck egg shades in the tiles.

And the corners are beautifully rounded and soft. To the left of it is a built in wardrobe that shall most certainly be staying and to the right of it is a more makeshift creation of a wardrobe that shall be relieved of its post and filled by a set of drawers I have in mind.

There are two things that excite me about this fireplace and the space that surrounds it.

1, The hearth is filled in but when you tap the wood that has been used to block it it is hollow. Robert and I are dying to know what lies behind it. I very much doubt whether we’ll ever develop it enough to have an open fire in this bedroom but I would certainly like anything other than this sheet of plywood covering up the hole.

2, One of the things I made sure I did when we were viewing the property was to check out the quality of the floorboards. As you can see we were left with underlay in this room but no carpet, this is not a problem at all, as I knew that these babies were underneath…….

Look at that!!! You beauties!!!

They are like that in every single room in the house. This means that we have the choice of having carpet, natural floorboards, painted floorboards or stained floorboards in any of the rooms.

That is the sort of thing that makes me disproportionately happy. But then we all know I need to get out more.

I love you and thank you for reading today.

  1. Even if the fireplace can’t be used for a real fire, I think it would look much better opened up with a decorative display such as logs, dried flowers or shells.

Why is it that fire places always attract us? especially if there is a real fire in there. Yet when flames shoot up from my frying pan as they did this morning I was terrified.

Cherry, our woodburner went in this week. We removed a fireplace very similar to this but our tiles were spring flowers! Our house must be of a similar vintage! I would love to see your ideas for a wood burning stove. Ours is in a hearth opening with no mantle piece. I need inspiration and pininterest ain’t cutting it! Many thanks and good luck!

  4. Nellie says:

    Yay for those floorboards underneath!

  5. It sounds as though you are really settling in well and discovering all that the new house has to offer. Even just finding out the way the light comes into a particular room at certain times of the day is always a thrill in a new house I think.

  6. Ruth says:

When I saw the sail boats I also thought of Ned. Let’s hope he fancies a nautically themed room at some stage.

  7. Lydia says:

All those floor boards, I love them. Can’t wait to see what you do with them.
Since reading your ‘white’ post yesterday, my husband is so pleased that you’ve finally converted me as he’s been saying for years how he likes white walls and I’ve always made him paint cream. I would also love white sofas but at the moment we have dark blue ones. I think I better start saving up for a whole house revamp. I was wondering though do you let the children eat anything on the sofas or do they only eat in the kitchen as I feel that if I do get white sofas the covers would be washed every day, not twice a year?

I would die of sheer bliss if those wood floors were under my carpet. Nothing makes me happier than to discover wood floors. The fireplace is just adorable! Are those little sail boats? It will make the perfect boy’s room for Ned one day. This reminds me of To The Manor Born episode where a beautiful fireplace hearth was discovered a the lodge.

what wonderful condition everything looks in, Love the boards, warm colour and cosy looking…
we have the like that in ours…I am much more interested in how you do the house up more than the garden…although I cant wait to see what you do in there as well..I think its why I buy home and interior magazines more than garden ones…I first discovered your page in one I have delivered every month Home and Antiques and deepjoy! it was a christmas issue.

    happy happy happy xxx

Fireplaces are so special aren’t they? We had a three storie Victorian house at one stage with fireplaces in just about every room and they all had a different personality. Sadly in the dining room a previous owner had removed a marble fireplace and put in a tiled 50′s one similar to yours. Another marble one was painted cream and we found the marble underneath. Two decades ago it was easy to find a great fireplace in a skip. My husband found three. Two he gave away a black marble and a huge wooden one. We kept a cast iron Victorian one and replaced the 50′s tiled one with it. You’d never be able to find such treasures now. Yours looks completely perfect in that room Cherry. Very bedroomy.

  11. Ooooo Wee! Wooden floors!! You are too, too lucky. Whether painted or sanded and waxed, they are a gem. I can’t wait to see how you do them. And that petite little fireplace is fabulous. Even with just brass andirons and a pretty plant inside. An open fire would be cozy looking, but you are so right…it pulls too much heat out of the room, leaves soot behind in places you don’t even realize, and is a messy pain to feed.

Thanks for sharing your new Forever Home with us!

It is just so much fun to explore and make delicious discoveries in one’s new home! Can’t wait to see what you do! :)

  13. Maria says:

Oh wow a lovely little fireplace. The same thing happened when we viewed our house many moons ago, I fell in love with a little cast iron fireplace in the bedroom which is now my daughters, at that moment I just knew it was the house for us – it is still there now even through countless re-decorations xx

  14. Michelle says:

Oh loving the little sailboats! My mum has a fireplace with the exact same tiles (sans sailboats). You might be able to have an open fire.. We recently opened ours up (know for a fact it hasnt been used in at least 30 yrs) and had an open fire before we fitted the wood burner – just a visit from our friendly neighbourhood chimney sweep and she was good to go! Xx

  15. Andy says:

Love that fireplace! !!!! Have a great day

That room and the fireplace already look great. I would love to get my hands on it. You’ll have great fun Cherry bringing that one to life.

  19. Oh goodness me!! I am completely with you on the excitement of finding floorboards hidden under carpet.. I only have them upstairs in my house, but cannot wait to get them painted up (they are not in quite so great condition as yours) it will brighten up my rooms so much :)
