Last week I was absolutely determined to finish off renovating my bedroom wardrobe before moving on to anything else. Then the shelves arrived in my kitchen over the weekend and now of course I can’t leave this room unfinished.

So, I have this dresser. Now I LOVE the shape of this dresser. I like the tongue and groove effect at the back and the side, I like the shape of it and I love the fact that there is lighting built in to the two cupboards already.
It is a Magnet kitchen.
Having never had a magnet kitchen before I have no idea if they are sturdy and very good investments or whether they are not. So time will tell but I believe it has been in the kitchen for some time.

As I felt like I was on roll from decorating the shelves my Dad built me for my birthday I then started to take a close look at the dresser. Eying it up and deciding what I could do to make it work for me as it’s not happening for me in it’s current guise, I don’t like the colour.
So first of all I removed the doors (!!!)
I thought it may give it a more open feeling (!!! again)

Then I started to move every piece of china I owned in to the dresser in an attempt to see if it would all fit in there. I think I was trying to disguise the dresser with the china.

Even adding a White section. * sigh *
But you know, it just was not happening.
So this morning I bit the bullet and made my way in to the garage to retrieve these……

Yep, the dresser is getting a paint job. It’s a big job and needs preparation or it’ll look terrible but it’s the only way I’ll be happy with the dresser. I’m certainly not buying a new one when, as I’ve already said, there’s so much I love about this one aside from the colour.

As you can tell my tripod still hasn’t turned up, apologies.
So I’ll get going on it today, rubbing it down with some course sandpaper to create a key for the primer to grasp on to and then set about painting it Milk White.

My feeling is that it’ll look really cool and when I stand back from it I’ll be happy I made the effort. In fact, knowing myself as I do, I’ll be prouder of the new revamped wardrobe , oops, dresser than of a brand new one.
And I’m most certainly putting the doors back on! #clearlyitookleaveofmysensesforamomenthere

I am so so happy i read this today!! We are just about to move into a new house (just waiting for the final parts!) and i have the go ahead from hubbie to convert to White!!!! So so excited and now with the added bonus of the glorious Annie Sloan paint, nothing will stop me! eeeeee!
xx
We’ll, you ALWAYS do a beautiful job and if there’s anyone who can make a run-of-the-mill kitchen look bespoke, it’ll be you! I can’t wait to see the end result, your ability to bring a room together and make it look so pretty, but also reflect so much of who you are is a gift, and one I wish I possessed! That and, despite all of your circumstances, your boundless energy and enthusiasm!!
But I also have to say I too am sooooo excited to finally have “The Great British Bake Off” back on our screens, saving us, if only in a small way, from post Olympic blues. I love this show and was even more excited to see there are 16 EPISODES in this series SIXTEEN!! That’s 4 whole months!!! Carrying us right through until Christmas (BIG CONTENTED SIGH).
As usual Cherry you scare me when you start painting everything white but I’m sure as usual it’ll look great in the end. And as you are converting me to everything white I’ve bought some white cushions for the sofa. And amazingly I’ve had them for 3 weeks now and they have no little sticky finger marks on them yet. Does white actually repel dirt I wonder?
Oh Bake off I love it! All motherly responsibilities are banished for that hour x
I’m so glad you are painting it. I was thinking “please paint it, please paint it” when I saw the photo. The dimensions and proportions of the dresser are so classic, it will be transformed with a lick of paint. Looking forward to seeing the finished result! x
Good for you to have the courage to paint it white! I would run into some opposition in my house about that. Men sometimes just want WOOD color. Good for Robert, too, that he must be going along with the transformation. He probably knows that it would be to no avail to object! I guess what I am saying is that if this was in my house I would not be the one doing the work, it would be hubby, so he would take a lot of persuasion of one kind or another to get him to do the job!
By the way, I would so love to have WHITE sofas and chairs, too, but here is where I have to give in to hubby. I did buy some white denim for slipcovering a wing chair but still have not taken it to the seamstress. I did prevail on that one. It WILL happen. I know I should just attempt it myself but I’m lazy.
I’m so happy you’re putting the doors back on—it will be gorgeous in white…maybe you can change the knobs out to something else, or paint them to match your colorful dishes on the shelves….all red? or a mixture of the colors….
darling….I just love it, by the way!

Love the idea of milk white and putting the doors back. it inspires me to do that with mine. I never saw that cupboard primer before and wonder if Home Depot or Menards will have something like that as I am inspired now to do all my cupboards…..You rock!
Hiya Cherry
Have you tried Annie Sloan chalk paint? I can’t praise it highly enough, it gives a fabulous finish and best of all you need do NO PREP AT ALL. No priming, no sanding, just slap it on.
I have painted furniture with emulsion for years but it wasn’t until discovering Annie Sloan that I felt confident enough to sell the odd piece of furniture because the finish you get is just so nice.
Love, love, love your new shelves!!

I just called Annie Sloan as I’d heard of her paint but I couldn’t believe my ears. You’re right!!!! This will save me about ten years in time spent painting. I’m going to order some. Thank you. Cx
It’s fabulous, you’ll never look back once you’ve tried it. Don’t hesitate to drop me a line if you need any tips, it can be a bit scary looking when you paint your first piece!! But never fear it always turns out beautifully!!

I bet this is Sarah b!!!, she is getting me hooked on Annie too!!! Sarah is the most amazing crafter ever and paints furniture beautifully. Def worth checking out her blog. X
you never stop woman! I want to march round to yours with a bottle of Prosecco, make you sit down and take a rest. Honestly, you wear me out.
That said, I tink painting it is going to look fab.
Yes, I remembered to watch Bake Off last night (normally forget to watch things that I want to see, and wake up in the middle of the night thinking ‘what have I forgotten’.
Loved it, some seriously good cooks on there (as always).
Got to go. little voice just said ‘mummy, I need help’! Yikes!

x
Sadie, don’t encourage me to drink even more!! Cx
Hi Cherry,
I can already ‘see’ the dresser in white, it’ll look amazing!
And Great British Bake Off – yeay!! Love it! Thought everyone did really well with the Rum Baba’s they looked tough!

Can’t wait to see the freshly painted dresser!
Cherry, have you tried to up the ISO to 400 or even higher?
Yes, I think I was rushing when I took these which is silly. I’m so determined to find my tripod. I feel a bit lost without it and embarrassed of my shoddy pictures. I hope you are well darling Merisi!
I think the dresser will look amazing painted. Esp next to the shelves! Im in the midst of trying to persuade my Hubby to put similar shelves in our kitchen (in fact Ive just finished blogging about it!) I love GBBO, Ive been waiting ages for it to come back on. Im not sure who my fave is yet. But I really want to try an upside down cake now!!xx
I am absolutelutely 100% convinced that a lick of white will make all the difference. The colour of the dresser as it stands is insipid to say the least. So you’d better get on with it !
See you when it’s finished.
I’m right on it!
Definitely think the colour will make a world of difference, can’t wait to see how it looks. I salvaged an old CC41 Utility cabinet and am sanding it down later to repaint it, it’s just too stained and damaged to leave it as it is.
I’m already hooked on ‘The Great British Bake Off’ Wasn’t too sure about that tomato and ginger upside down cake…but I admired his wilingness to try something a bit ‘out there’! x
Yes painting it is the only way to go – but I would paint the back maybe a duck egg blue, and white body or the other way around – blue dresser with white back?
